Back to nature is to going back to our small old town, Salatiga. Living in height near Merbabu mountain, Central Java with chill weather always make us craving for food. Furthermore Salatiga located near mountain sides, a lot of fresh vegetable also fruit been up grown here.
As my presumption, Salatiga should have at least restaurant who served vegetarian menus. After I’ve been living for almost 3 weeks in Salatiga, there is not so much restaurant with vegetarian menus :( [even the most hype and brand new café couldn’t make their salad outstanding!] But...things came better when I found some delicacies which is a traditional yet local meals. The ingredients hand picked locally and taste sooo Salatiga. Here's the article!
1. Nasi Pecel Keong
Near Muncul spring in west side of Salatiga off we go just to taste a plate of Nasi Pecel Keong. Warung makan “Mbak Toen” been the most wanted warung makan in here. Evenmore they were already expend their lot to second floor.
Hm ok lets go back to the kitchen. Their specialty is Nasi Pecel Keong. Pecel here is amount varian of boiled veggies, also keong as French man known kinda same as escargot. This two were paired into one plate within nice warm white rice and topped with peanut sauce.
What I loved most is the gooeyness from keong texture. And its cooked with ginger so made my throat and belly getting warmed.
2. Sego Jagung

Once my mom came home with this meals. Then I asked where she buy it. At last I found them in Jetis traditional market. I was quite exited when knowing any people still make this “proletariat food”. By the history, some unlucky people whom can’t afford rice just can enjoy refined dry corn.
The taste weird when it came itself without any condiment. My pallet felt the scaly texture of sego jagung, but it became much nice when combine it with sambal, bunch of veggies (like pecel sayur) combine with gudangan (topping made with grated ripe coconut flesh) and peyek gereh pethek (kinda of anchovy).
It felt complete in my whole mouth. The freshness from the veggies, hot hint of sambal, weird scaly sego jagung and suppa salty yet cruchy from the cracker.
3. Bakwan Jembak

My favorito in Salatiga was kind of this gorengan sayur or veggie pancake. Salatiga and place around it really like make gorengan sayur. One of them were made from Jembak veggie which could easily found near stream or river side. Another snack were made from cassava leaf, for the best texture could pick the tip of leaf.
To proceed this fella, just need to mix it with flour and gave them seasoned. At last fried them in the deep fried until golden brown. Yummy! Even it deep fried unhealthy snack but it was made from veggies so it less guilty though :)
I'm so eager to hope for their guts to empower their own local potentions. As if the demand or market become more aware bout their food nutrition standart.
